The Book of Life {Book Review}

{This is where I usually have the publishing info and summary, etc, but Goodreads is acting up. I sorry}

I’ve read so many mixed reviews about this series. Some are heinous and some are delightful, some love it and some hate it. I’ve found that most peeps fall heave on either side…there’s not a lot of those who say “oh I liked it okay.” Where do I fall, you ask? I’ll tell you… ON THE OH MY GOSH I LOVE THIS SERIES side.

I’m such a forgiving reader which came in handy whilst reading A Discovery of Witches . Harkness described every single solitary thing to the nth degree. It was beyond annoying. But beneath the words was a story that deserved to be read. It was complicated and detailed and fun!! I’m so glad I stuck with it. Shadow of Night was such a great follow-up! Being a history nerd, I found myself in heaven as it took place in my favorite century! Again, Harkness delivered a superb second novel. So when it came time to read this one, I took my time. I wanted it to last. I read this over the course of a week and when I got to the last 100 pages I’m pretty sure I held my breath. *sigh* What a great story! What a wonderful cast! What an amazing imagination Deborah Harkness has!

I loved this series and will tell anyone who wants a fun, romantic, cheesy, charming and crazy series to read. Yes, there are vampires who are possessive and protective {they acknowledge it and make no apologies. Also, they don’t sparkle}. Yes, Harkness uses 25 words to describe what the desk looks like instead of 10. Yes, there are moments that drag on like RuPaul but guess what people…. I’m certain that you can get past it if you know what you’re getting into. Just accept it, look past it and keep reading. That’s what I did and I’m glad I did it.

  1. I started reading A Discovery of Witches several months ago and had to quit..maybe I should give it a second shot, because the 2nd book sounds so good! And the RuPaul reference…hilarious!

    • Haha! Thanks you, it just came to me;)
      This series, I’ve found, isn’t for everyone. At first I didn’t think it was for me either but it turns out I was wrong. Maybe try again but if it still feels meh then don’t force it. I thought it picked up in the bottom half of the book. When they go back to Madison to the Bishop house is my favorite.

  2. I’m sad this series went down hill for me. I wish I could have enjoyed all of it with you ladies, but at least I got to enjoy the first one with you guys. I’m glad the conclusion was a success for you guys.
    “Drag on like RuPaul” *dead*

    • Hi! No it’s not YA but it’s just as fun as one:) I’ll warn you that the first book is tough to get used to as the author loves describing everything. But trust me, the story is so worth pushing through. I miss this series already.
