The Divergent Trilogy {Book review}

Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Author: Veronica Roth
Genres: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Fantasy

Okay…here we go…

I read this trilogy over the course of 3 1/2 days. Coming off of a two book snafu, this was exactly what I needed. Now I must say, I was anti-Divergent for a long time. I heard too many comparisons to The Hunger Games and didn’t want to involve myself with books that I would spend my time comparing to another series I love. Then I didn’t want to be a bandwagoner once the books got popular. THEN when I saw that it was becoming a movie, I wanted to avoid reading them on the offchance that someone would think I was only doing so because of the movies. *groans* How stupid was I!!!! Who cares about all those things… really! I mean, I am such a snob and a half. Anyway, I digress.

I have to thank my friend Annie for bringing these books to my house unexpectedly (she was expected, the books were not). I still hadn’t made up my mind to read them yet but now it was too late. There they were sitting on my shelf, waiting. Luckily (after my two book flop fest) I picked Divergent from my book bowl and thought, “Okay, this is it. Time to see what all the fuss is about!” And I did. And now I know.

These books are so SO good. The series as a whole gets a solid 5 stars. The message, the journey, the growth of the characters, the action it all comes together perfectly. I’m afraid of oversimplifying or missing something so I just want to give this series a standing ovation. *stands, claps, cries* That pretty much sums up how I feel.

Veronica Roth has a way of writing that reaches into your chest and grips your heart Temple of Doom style. I literally woke up anxious over something that happens in the second book, Insurgent. I mean, really? This is fiction, people!! but the amount of passion and raw feels that come through *shakes head* it’s intense. You’re gonna laugh, you’re going to cry, you’re going to shake your head and throw your hand up in frustration (I’d say both hands but chances are the book would go flying, so…).

If you’re looking for a series that’s real, that’s down right cool, that’s loaded with lovable and hate…able(is that even a word?) characters, and gives you the case of the feels that you cannot cure, then this is a series for you.

Oh and by the way, this series is NOTHING LIKE THE HUNGER GAMES. I’m going to slap anyone who tries to tell me they’re exactly alike. There are little similarities but all in all, it’s not even close. Okay, I’m done 🙂
